Elemental Fracture – Launcher 3.5.4 – Patch Notes

Relaunch your launcher and let it update itself to 3.5.4. The game itself does not change: the balance patch stays at Game 6.4.4 and the mod package at Mod 3.18.4.
This one is about getting the game onto your machine, and about the evening in which that broke. The short version: for a few hours tonight, fresh installs failed with “os error 2” or a 403 on the game archive. That was ours, it is fixed in 3.5.4, and installing is now a good deal faster and far lighter on our servers than it has ever been. If an install failed on you, relaunch the launcher and press Install again; it carries on from what it already has.
Installing the game
The game now arrives in pieces, from near you. The base game is an 11 GB archive. Until today every fresh install streamed all of it from our own server, because a file that size cannot be cached by the network in front of us. 3.5 cuts the archive into 42 pieces of 256 MB that the network does cache, so once the first player in your part of the world has pulled a piece, everyone after them gets it from a server close to them instead of from ours. Same bytes, same checks (every piece is verified against the signed release list, and so is the whole archive once it is put back together), much faster for you, and a busy install night can no longer starve the game servers of bandwidth. Which is exactly what happened tonight.
What went wrong tonight. 3.5.0 to 3.5.3 had a bug in that new path: on a machine with no earlier download, the launcher opened the file it was assembling without creating it first, and the very first piece failed with “No such file or directory”, which Windows and Linux report as os error 2. 3.5.0 quietly fell back to downloading the whole archive; later versions showed the error. While we were separately protecting the servers from a flood of whole-archive downloads, that fallback started answering 403 as well. 3.5.4 creates the file. For half an hour we also re-published the release list without the pieces, so that every launcher could install the old way while the fix was built. Sorry for the evening.
Verify game files is cheaper and kinder. Repairing a file used to read it out of the whole archive on our server; it now reads it out of the cached pieces. Same result, no weight on the origin.
Interrupted installs resume by the piece. Close the launcher mid-install and reopen it: it continues from the last complete piece instead of from zero.
Behind the scenes (server side, nothing to install)
- Verification emails. If you registered today and the email never came, it was most likely sent through an address Gmail had started throttling. The site now sends through our own mail server: Google and Microsoft addresses are delivered directly, everyone else through a trusted relay. If you are still waiting on a code, request a new one. Staff can also verify an address on request.
- Server capacity in North America. Our main host was running out of memory from idle lobbies kept warm for too long, and that was behind tonight’s rubber-banding and the “servers at maximum capacity” errors. Idle lobbies are now released after 10 minutes instead of 30, the server manager gives up an idle lobby before it refuses anyone, and a lobby that takes a little longer to boot is no longer counted as unavailable.
- A second download region. A full mirror of the download content now runs in South America, kept in sync automatically, with the network choosing the closer source.
